Biography

Singer/songwriter Ruth Dunfield is an accomplished musician, performing and writing music for most of her life, acquiring a loyal cult following who appreciates her authentic artistic voice. She is a veteran of the 70's Boston folk club scene, including performances with the Harvard Square Folk Festival and singing at The Bitter End Coffeehouse in New York City. It is here that she developed a passion for writing songs that speak about the struggles of people who do not have a voice, performing in a haunting vocal style that leaves audiences moved. She has maintained a busy schedule, performing in Universities, colleges, and coffeehouses in the New England states and the Maritime Provinces as well as recording segments for CBC programs. The release of her first recording entitled Times Like This was well received as she toured throughout the eastern coast of the United States.

Dunfield's latest release, Saltwater Women (2003), continues to champion the themes that are so important to a woman dedicated to writing and singing songs with timeless truths, songs that have become a powerful manifesto running throughout her body of work. She sings of hope through adversity, survival in a sometimes hostile world, and ultimately empowering yourself despite the odds against you. Her songs in Saltwater Woman convey the romance of the sea, address the near extinction on the right whales, as well as featuring fascinating true stories about women and the age of sail. As you listen to Ruth's melodic voice and finger-style guitar you will hear hints of jazz, blues, and country disguised in the folk genre that is the essence of her music. Ruth has always ignored commercial pressures, choosing to remain true to the themes and music that are most important to her, winning over her audiences with an honesty and sincerity that leaves the listener inspired.
